Safety Tips
- •Stay informed. Sign up for Notify NYC alerts - text "NotifyNYC" to 692-692 or visit nyc.gov/notify
- •Allow extra travel time. Use public transportation when possible.
- •If you must drive, use major streets and remember vehicles take longer to stop on snow and ice.
- •Pedestrians: Wear sturdy boots with traction. Use handrails on stairs. Avoid slippery surfaces.
- •Seniors should take extra care outdoors to avoid slips and falls.
- •Check on neighbors, especially older adults and people with disabilities or health conditions.
City Snow Response
During major snow events, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) moves to 12-hour shifts with over 2,600 workers per shift to keep streets clear. You can monitor their progress in real-time via the PlowNYC tracker.
Alternate Side Parking is typically suspended during and after major storms. Parking meters may still be in effect. Check 311 for current status.
Warming Centers & Shelters
During Code Blue (when temperatures drop to 32°F or below), the city activates additional resources:
- •Warming buses deployed throughout the city
- •Warming spaces at NYC Health + Hospitals locations
- •School locations open as warming centers
- •All shelters have an open-door policy during Code Blue
For current warming center locations, contact 311 or visit a LinkNYC kiosk.
Heat & Hot Water Issues
By law, landlords must provide heat of at least 68°F between 6 AM and 10 PM when outdoor temps fall below 55°F.
If you have issues with heat or hot water in your apartment:
- Call your landlord first
- If they don't respond quickly, file a 311 complaint online or call 311
- HPD inspectors are working overtime during the storm to respond
NYCHA residents: File a complaint through the MyNYCHA app or call 718-707-7771.
NYCHA Residents
NYCHA mobilizes additional resources during storms, including extra teams for elevator, heat, and technical repairs.
For non-emergency assistance:
- •Call Customer Contact Center: 718-707-7771
- •Submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA app
Power Outages
- •Keep cell phones charged before the storm

- •If you rely on Life Sustaining Equipment and lose power, call 911
